Mari taiga is the vast forests in the south of the Republic of Mari El, adjoined to the left bank of the Volga.
Mari forests are famous for all the Volga Region, the whole of Russia, it is the largest forest on the Volga. Forests are the main wealth of the Republic, which contains vast reserves of timber. One of the cleanest rivers in European Russia, a left tributary of the Volga - Big Kokshaga gave the name to Reserve . The reserve is a typical plot of the Mari lowland. There are no steep ravines and high hills, a quiet beaver streams way through the swampy woods to Kokshaga. Reserve keeps intact plant communities: forests, wetlands, meadows, which are habitat for rare animals and many rare and plants.
In local forests the unique place whose significance in the protection of nature cannot be overemphasized preserved. One of them is the oakery in the floodplain of Big Kokshaga. In oakery on the Big Kokshaga one can meet both sprouted acorns and young oaks and middle-aged trees. About such oakery people say that they have a future. Reserve "Big Kokshaga" is a small island of virgin nature in Mari El, its pride and wealth.
